About the Work:
The photographs on this web site are
processed and printed individually in a traditional
wet darkroom.
There is no digital work done with these images. The only
digital work was done during scanning for
production of this web site. I attempted to match the color
of the prints as best I could to the actual prints,
there is no increase in contrast, levels, etc. done in Photoshop.
All that work is done in the darkroom.
I work with the traditional methods of photographic printing,
and although I recognize the use and
capabilities of digital, it is not for me. I enjoy the hands-on
qualities of working with chemicals and papers.
All the work shown was produced with a 4"
x 5" or an 8" x 10" view camera. Soon to
be added will be work
produced with an 11" x 14" camera. I use large
format cameras because they allow me to slow down and
focus on the individual aesthetic qualities of each
image. The negatives are developed with a pyro staining
developer. My prints are archivally processed,
toned, and washed on a double-weight, fiber-based, silver
gelatin paper. I use a selenium toner for it's archival
qualities and slight deepening of the blacks.
The subject matter in which I photograph is by no means
unique or original. It is what catches my attention
and interests me. I view every photograph as a study
of the elements that create that interest. Whether
it's a
scene in front of me, a tight detail of textures, or a botanical
study, it's all an attempt to capture and translate
what caught my attention in the means of composition, shape,
form, tone, and light in the prints as a final
image. Hopefully I can convey some of those same feelings
I had at the moment of making the photograph
to others.
