About the Work:
The photographs on this web site are
processed and printed individually in a traditional
wet darkroom.
There is no digital work done with these images. The only
digital work was done during scanning for
production of this web site. I attempted to match the color
of the prints as best I could to the actual prints,
there is no increase in contrast, levels, etc. done in Photoshop.
All that work is done in the darkroom.
I enjoy the hands-on qualities of working with chemicals
and papers.
All the work shown was produced with a 4x5, 8x10,
or an 11x14 inch view camera. I favor large format
cameras because they allow me to slow down and focus
on the individual aesthetic qualities of each
image
while maintaining a level of detail that is difficult to
achieve otherwise. The negatives are developed with
a pyro
staining developer. 8x10 and 11x14 inch negatives are
translated into contact prints by placing the negative
directly on the paper then exposing the paper to a light
source. Most 4x5 negatives are enlarged to an 8x10 inch
print with the use of a photographic enlarger. The prints
are archivally processed, toned, and washed on a
double-weight, fiber-based, silver gelatin paper. I
use a selenium toner for it's archival qualities and slight
deepening of the blacks. The photographs are then mounted
and matted on 100% acid-free archival mat board.
Each print is signed and numbered in editions of 30.
